BERLUSPUTIN ("L'anomalo bicefalo")
BerlusPutin is an adaptation of Italian Nobel laureate Dario Fo’s play The Double Headed Anomaly (L’Anomalo Bicefalo). The Russian adaptation is directed by Varvara Faer. The play was nominated for Russian nation festival “Golden Mask” Golden Mask award in the category of “Experiment” in 2013.
Berlusconi cheerfully comes to visit his best friend Putin in Russia when all of a sudden terrorists attack. They wanted to kill Putin but they kill Berlusconi instead. Putin is critically injured with a serious head trauma and the right side of Berlusconi’s still-warm brain is transplanted into Putin’s head in order to save him. The new hybrid BerlusPutin wakes up and remembers nothing. His ex-wife tries to explain what happened. At the center of this satire is the idea that however the head of state treats his wife is the same way he’ll treat the country.
The play is based on the hidden and secretive details of the relationship between Ludmila and Vladimir Putin. BerlusPutin is a dark political satire in the tradition of Italian commedia dell'arte.
Dario Fo is a playwright, director, artist, and mainstay of Italian theatre. He was the recipient of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Literature. Much of his dramatic work depends on improvisation and aims to resuscitate so-called "illegitimate" forms of theatre, such as those performed by giullari (medieval strolling players) and, more famously, the ancient Italian style of commedia dell'arte.
